The soulful altoist is backed by a funky rhythm section (either Eric Gale or Cornell Dupree on guitar, keyboardist Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey or Ron Carter on electric bass, and drummer Bernard Purdie) that often sounds as if it is just going through the motions.
