The idea for the album came from Harris, who had previously worked with both Parton and Ronstadt separately and wanted to collaborate with them on an album.

The three singers began recording the album in 1985 but faced numerous delays due to scheduling conflicts and health issues. The album was eventually released in March 1987 and was a critical and commercial success, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and winning a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
