Duke Ellington / Coleman Hawkins / John Coltrane
The Great Tenor Encounters
1978 green label gatefold original. Glossy, NM-/EX vinyl. VG++ jacket! Small corner bumps. "This superb (if out-of-print) two-LP set includes both of the unique sessions that Duke Ellington had with Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane. Hawkins appears as part of an octet led by Ellington that also co-stars Johnny Hodges and Ray Nance; "Mood Indigo," "Self Portrait of the Bean," a rompin' "The Jeep Is Jumpin" and "Solitude" (the latter not included on the original LP) are classic. For the date with Coltrane, he appeared as a pianist with 'Trane's quartet; some of the selections also have Ellington's bassist and drummer filling in. Best are the definitive version of "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Take the Coltrane." Both Ellington and Coltrane sound inspired by each other's presence (as they should be). Highly recommended music in one form or another." All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
