Whyton, Wally

Leave Them A Flower
Sealed 1969 Gatefold Original. “The Former Skiffle Star And Leader Of The Vipers Skiffle Group Delivers Up A Rousing, Exciting, Tuneful Country-Folk Album With Just Enough Of An English Inflection To Separate It From Most Of The Competition — Think Of Johnny Cash And Ed McCurdy, And You're On The Right Track. Whyton's Guitar Is Backed Up By Alun Davies And Jon Mark, Tony Carr On The Drums, And Even A Trinidad Steel Band. Whyton's Vocals Are Rich, Rough-Hewn, And Honest, And He's Even Able To Jump Between Calypso And A Nicely Raw, Electric Cover Of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" Without Skipping A Beat, And He Even Delivers Up Gordon Lightfoot's "Steel Rail Blues" With Some Nice, Edgy Singing And Crisp Triple-Layered Acoustic Guitars, And The Album Closes With What Could Be The Prettiest, Smoothest Version Of Tom Paxton's "That Last Thing On My Mind" Possibly Ever Heard — It's Certainly In The Running Alongside Paxton's Own. The Rest Consists Mostly Of Originals And Traditional Numbers That Are Strong In Their Own Right, If Not As Memorable, Except For The Title Track, An Environmental Anthem That Has Endured Across The Decades.” Bruce Eder, AMG.
