"This Out-of-print Double-lp Has The Complete Contents Of Charlie Byrd's At The Village Vanguard And Byrd At The Gate; Both Sessions Have Since Been Reissued As Separate Cds. Byrd Performs The Latter Set (Three Standards And The 20½-minute "Fantasia On Which Side Are You On") With His Regular 1960 Trio (Which Also Includes Bassist Keter Betts And Drummer Buddy Deppenschmidt) While The Former Date Has The Same Trio In 1963 Welcoming Trumpeter Clark Terry And Tenor Saxophonist Selden Powell To Three Songs Apiece. Byrd Plays Beautifully Throughout And Was Clearly In His Early Prime. These Former Offbeat And Riverside Dates, Which Are Superior To Byrd's Slightly Later (And More Commercial) Columbia Albums, Are Well Worth Picking Up." AMG Review By Scott Yanow
