The Band Was Formed In Oakland, California In 1968 By Saxophonist Emilio Castillo And Baritone Saxophonist Stephen "Doc" Kupka. They Started As A Backup Band For A Variety Of Soul And R&b Artists, But Eventually Formed Their Own Group And Began Developing Their Own Sound.
"East Bay Grease" Showcases The Band's Signature Sound, Which Blends Soul, Funk, And Jazz With A Horn-heavy Sound. The Album's Title Is A Nod To The Band's Roots In The East Bay Area Of California, Which Includes Oakland, Berkeley, And Other Nearby Cities.
The Album Features Several Original Compositions, Including "Knock Yourself Out" & "Sparkling In The Sand".
"East Bay Grease" Was A Critical Success And Helped Establish Tower Of Power As One Of The Leading Funk And Soul Bands Of The 1970s. The Album's Success Led To A Recording Contract With Warner Bros. Records, And The Band Went On To Release Several More Successful Albums Throughout The Decade.
