The album was produced by Jack Douglas and features a mix of rock, pop, and ballad tracks that showcase Lennon's and Ono's songwriting and vocal talents. The album was released on the Geffen record label and was a commercial success, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Tragically, just three weeks after the album's release, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment building in New York City, which led to the album becoming a poignant farewell of sorts to the legendary musician. In 1981, "Double Fantasy" won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and the following year, Yoko Ono released "Milk and Honey," a posthumous album featuring recording sessions from the same time period as "Double Fantasy."
