"Atom Heart Mother" is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on October 2, 1970, by Harvest Records. It features the 23-minute title track, which takes up the entire first side of the LP and is a suite in six parts, blending rock, orchestral, and choral elements. This ambitious composition showcases the band's experimental approach, utilizing brass, choir, and complex structuring that marked their transition from psychedelic rock towards more progressive rock tendencies.
The second side of the album includes three shorter tracks written by individual band members: "If" by Roger Waters, "Summer '68" by Richard Wright, and "Fat Old Sun" by David Gilmour. These songs provide a contrast to the grandiosity of the title track with their more traditional song structures and introspective lyrics. The album concludes with the avant-garde "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," a three-part instrumental and sound collage featuring the sounds of band roadie Alan Styles preparing and eating breakfast.
